Sea of Thieves: Xbox Series X upgrade details

Update (Nov. 4, 2020) — Here’s the latest scoop on how Sea of Thieves will be upgraded for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

It sure is fun sailing and searching for treasure in Sea of Thieves, isn’t it? The one thing that isn’t so fun, however, is dealing with the game’s 30 frames-per-second frame rate on console. Fortunately, a Sea of Thieves Xbox Series X upgrade is not only on the roadmap, but should arrive when the Series X launches on Nov. 10. That will hopefully alleviate some of the game’s shortcomings in the graphics department.

What can you expect when Sea of Thieves is upgraded for the Xbox Series X? Sadly, not a lot of details about this have been shared, which is remarkable when you consider Microsoft has been more specific in other circumstances, such as when talking about the Ori and the Will of the Wisps Xbox Series X upgrade.

If you’ll allow for a bit of speculation, though, it is my belief that Sea of Thieves will see the same kind of improvements just about every other upgraded title will get, which is full 4K resolution at 60 frames-per-second.

As far as resolution is concerned, this won’t be anything new for those currently playing the game on Xbox One X. Sea of Thieves is already a looker there, though you could see some other graphical enhancements made possible by the Xbox Series X’s more powerful GPU.

In the area of frame rate, however, the jump to 60 frames-per-second could be huge. Sea of Thieves will likely feel like an entirely different game with that higher frame rate, especially for those who take part in PvP activities against PC players who have no frame rate ceiling at all.

At press time, the launch of both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S is a little more than a month away. I’m incredibly eager for Microsoft to talk more about how Sea of Thieves will change on the new machines. You can be certain that, as soon as more details are available, I’ll be back with an update.
